In David Hockney's Portrait of an Artist (Pool with Two Figures), we see Peter staring down into the water at a frog-like swimmer in the pool. The mountains, the pool, and the figures are the actors in this play, but Peter is the star. Peter is dressed in the layered look, complete with peach colored blazer and casual shoes. Either Peter is very warm, standing in the morning sunlight, or the swimmer is freezing, doing a polar bear lap in the pool. The creamy yellow light casts a gray-green shadow behind Peter. The view across the valley is lush and green. The rectangular tiles on the pool interior, the rectangle of the pool itself and the square tiles of the pool side where Peter is standing provide the perfect counterpoint to the organic shapes of the mountains, plants, and figures, as well as the refracting patterns of light in the water. This pool setting is Shangri-La.
