Gustav Klimt was surely a painter concerned with decoration, but he delved so deeply into the essence of decoration, ornament and beauty that he revealed their eternal and infinite forms. In transcending the style of his times, the paintings become beauty themselves.

In Portrait of Adele Bloch-Bauer I, he exploits the flat, geometric elements, using the black, silver and gold rectangles, the split circles, triangles, the linear spirals, and both jagged and curved line. Klimt goes beyond the surface perception into experience itself; Adele exists in a heaven of perfection, and the viewer is free to join her.
