The painting, Three Purple Flowers, was inspired by one of my trips to Inniswood Gardens. Various smaller plants and one large plant fill the canvas. While the title may suggest the flowers are the main attraction, when viewing the large plant, leaves and all, the flowers take on a less significant role. The leaves suggest the wings of a bird, fluttering and flapping with a rise and fall, while the flowers serve as a head and plumage. The pattern of the broken brushstrokes of light and shadow against the solid ground are important to the personality of the work. Bird imagery in my paintings represents knowledge and freedom.
