Paint Like an Egyptian

I love ancient Egyptian art. The stylized people and mysterious hieroglyphs, along with their generous use of symbols and decoration are fascinating to look at. I was recently reading a book on Egyptian art, symbol and magic. They practiced magic as part of their belief system. Both myth and magic were important parts of their culture.

The size and placement of people in their paintings often denote the prestige and power of the individuals depicted. The large circular disk on the pharaoh's crown is representative of the sun, which they worshipped. The cobra on the crown has symbolic meaning as well.

The symbols and markings make the art interesting even when one is not aware of the meaning intended by the artist or the context in which it was originally created.
